Bigjeeze Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Take a look - don't forget you need a rj45 for connecting to the Uni network (assuming you are in halls) http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94732/rb/21428026072 Quote

Guest HairyPlateEater Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Aria.co.uk are brilliant for doing factory refurbished products. Link given takes you to their current stocklist for laptops. Many a bargain to be had, most with minimum 90 day rtb waranties. Quote
jkspoff Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Ebuyer or empire direct are excellent value, get one of the latest generation Sony Vaio laptops if your budget extends to it, mine is superb and build quality excellent, very reliable too, light weight and thin with high end specs. The Intel Centrino Duo processor is lightening fast in all applications. http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...special_uid=941 http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/prod...20vaio%20laptop http://www.intel.com/products/centrino/duo...+Feature_06ww35 Quote

Guest MATT jr Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Thanks all. before i posted this topic - i looked up reviews on processors, and the intel duo does seem a favoured processor - its rival being the AMD turion 64X2. going on these two processors - it narrows the choice (at last!). HP and acer have laptops with the AMD processor (which are in budget - others do aswel, but go over budget) - but most makes of laptop - have an intel in them one form or another. toshiba & sony have intel - so going on the duo one, i found this toshiba...the toshibas seem a good quality to value balance the sony laptops are good guality - but are too expensive for what you get. Guest HairyPlateEater Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 I've got a Toshiba Satellite Pro and had no complaints with it at all. good quality, good weight, good price. That looks a good spec for the money too. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 yeah, i do like that one. theres two Toshiba's below that one (in price terms) both are the intel solo. and for the money difference i would rather have the duo  -- theres one above it, which is the same, except more RAM & hard drive - thats Quote
jkspoff Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Toshiba a good reliable laptop manufacturer, best to go with one of these rather than an unknown higher spec make. My father in laws got a Fuitsu thingy and its bulky, noisy and unreliable. Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 im thinking of going with the one i posted above - as its a toshiba with the dual core processor - that fits in my budget. i have seen all the laptops in the shops, and the toshiba look/feel quality. it has to last for a good few years - we cant afford to buy computers every 6 months like some people. this one im on is almost 5 years old, and theres no plans for replacing it yet - or anytime soon. jkspoff Posted September 2, 2006 Report Posted September 2, 2006 Intel are releasing the Core II Duo processor next week, but I suspect they will be big notes....... Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 if intel are only just releasing it next week - wont it take more time to filter into the manufactures? and the chances are they will be over budget. MJR Quote

MJR Yes and yes I agree, they will initially be expensive and probably only on the high end stuff, my Centrino Duo flys through all applications and am more than happy with it for many years. Technology evolves so fast there is never any chance in keeping up ! Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 i had a play on one today, very impressed with its ability. i think i am getting the toshiba - as times running out, and any problems need to be sorted before i go, thanks all, MJR Quote

I run a computer business, the best laptop advice is:-1) Stick to known makes - Toshiba, Acer, Compaq, IBM etc2) If battery life is important head towards the 'mobile' chips3) If possible and if not too expensive get extended warranty (esecially if its an expensive laptop eg Apple)4) Double check the anti-reflective properties of the screen, some new acer's have a glass like finish.... don't wear a white shirt!
